Editing RAW clips that shot with the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6K Pro, using only a 13-inch M1 MacBookPro 2020.

Is it possible to editing 6K RAW clip only on a laptop computer?

I usually creating 4K ProRes 422 HQ footage by 5.7K RAW 30 or 60 fps materials shot with Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6K Pro.

I wrote previous article about shooting with Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6K Pro.

In this article, I introducing my post-production process with Blackmagic RAW shot by Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6K Pro.

Because I couldn't find information that  how much a machine power I needed to editing 6K Blackmagic RAW in Japanese.

I'm glad if this article can be your reference.

It's possible to editing 6K Blackmagic RAW using only 13-inch M1 MacBookPro by some ingenuity.

Blackmagic RAW witch non-compressed RAW format is requires less machine power when editing than a compressed format.

However, when the resolution reached 6K, playback response during editing will be decrease.

I'm solving that problem with Generate Proxy Media function of DaVinci Resolve 17.

It takes little times, but I dividing the process into small tasks.

The spec of my 13-inch M1 MacBookPro.

13-inch MacBookPro modeled in 2020

  • 8 core CPU
  • 8 core GPU
  • Apple M1 chip with 16 core Neural Engine
  • 16GB unified memory
  • 2TD SSD storage

I'm connect the portable SSD for shooting to the Mac and use it as an external storage as it is.

I usually work in one-man operation. The portability of M1 MacBookPro helps me.

Using proxy media for comfortable editing.

DaVinci Resolve has the Generate Optimized Media function from before, In ver.17, Generation Proxy Media function has been added.

Once I was created new project, Set proxy media format in Project Setting menu first. Format is ProRes 422 Proxy I usually choice.

I'm import Blackmagic RAW clips into media pool, I generate proxy media.

The process needs some times, so I wait while cleaning for my camera and lenses used for shooting that day.

Once proxy media was generated, turn on Use Proxy Media if Available in Playback menu.

So I can use proxy media on cut editing.

Fit or crop RAW clip into screen.

5.7K Blackmagic RAW has a 17:9 aspect ratio, so fitting it to a 4K 16:9 screen will add black bars at the top and bottom.

We can choice the setting whether to fit to the long side or crop to fit to the short side in Project Setting menu.

Crop setting also can choice on individual clips by Inspector function.

Adding camera moves to clips easily.

You can adding some camera move to clips easily by Inspector function of DaVinci Resolve.

You can zoom the clips any magnification and correct the tilt of the camera.

In addition, You can adding movement of X-Y coordinate and zooming with specify both start point and end point into clip.

Also We can preview clip added LUT by Apply LUT option of Inspector function.

Turn off Use Proxy Media and do the primary color correction.

If you finish your cut editing, turn off Use Proxy Media for color correction.

In Color tab, One of node is pre-connected to each clips.

On the first node, adjusts the clip's color profile, white balance, ISO sensitivity, exposure, high-end and low-end.

If you have adjusted the white balance at the shooting, White Balance setting is As Shot. If need to change it, set it any White Balance setting.

Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6K Pro have dual ISO sensitivity which base ISO sensitivity are 400 and 3200.

You can choose ISO sensitivity in the range that both of dual ISO sensitivity but for now keep the setting at the time of shooting.

You can turn on Apply LUT to apply LUT to clip.

In my case, Using Film to Expand Video LUT on shooting, so apply same LUT to clip.

You can select any other LUT by two-finger tap a node If you need.

Copy And Paste Camera Raw setting to other clips and adjust exposure of each clips.

If you finish adjust to Camera Raw tab of first clip, press the shortcut: option+any number to copy settings, select other clips to paste by shortcut: command+same number.

Adjusting the exposure of each clips with ISO or Exposure on Camera Raw tab.

You will focus mid-tone here because high-end-tone and low-end-tone will be adjusted later.

Adjust high-end tone and low-end tone to ensure the wide range exposure.

Adjusting the range of exposure on Primary tab.

You will adjust low-end by Lift wheel and high-end by Gain wheel to ensure as wide range exposure as possible.

If there an unwanted changes in mid-tone, Adjusting Gamma wheel to fine-tune.

Offset wheel changes whole tone since low-end to high-end of exposure similar of Exposure parameter.

Basically unused that but as use for fine-tune as you need.

Adjust contrast on second node of clips.

I adjust the high light and shadow by tone curve on second node.

You can make lift the shadow of dark subject due to back light or against the sun.

If you want to do creative color grading, You will do it on second node.

In my case, I don't creative color grading because I want finish natural color in the stock footage.

If you adding third node, you will see the histogram and color scope adjusted by second node. so you while checking it and adjust contrast on second node.

If necessary do noise reduction on third node.

Blackmagic RAW is not given in-camera noise reduction.

Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6K Pro has dual ISO sensitivity which 400 and 3200, If you shot with ISO 3200 on dark scene and lift up exposure about +1EV on post production, you would be curious the noises.

In those case, I will apply noise reduction on third node.

For example, my noise reduction setting as follow in some cases, the effects is below.

Temporal NR

  • Frames: 5
  • Mo. Est. Type: Faster
  • Motion Range: Small
Temporal Threshold

  • Luma: 2.0
  • Chroma: 2.0
  • Motion: 50.0

Real time preview while applying noise reduction on clips are needs much machine power, so I try to check the result after rendering many time by various setting of noise reduction.

That is so hard, so you control the exposure by lighting on shooting is worth it.

Another choice is shooting by mirrorless camera which good performance high ISO sensitivity and in-camera noise reduction in dark scenes that needs high ISO sensitivity.

Export clips in required format.

If you finish color grading, you will export clips in required format on Deliver tab.

I want export clips in 4K ProRes 422 HQ, so my setting is follows.

Video

  • Format: QuickTime
  • Codec: Apple ProRes
  • Type: Apple ProRes 422 HQ
  • Resolution 3840 x 2160 Ultra HD

Stock footage no need sounds, so I no check on Export Audio.

I want export clips on timeline to individual clips, so I setting as follows.

File

  • Filename uses: Custom name
  • Use unique filenames
  • Add a unique name as: Suffix

You will finish export setting, push Add to Render Queue, push Render All, so start rendering and exports.

Rendering performance needs machine power, in sometimes I adding several export setting to render queue, start rendering before bed in.

Could We editing the clips on plural timeline?

In the case of editing plural timeline which ProRes 422 Proxy generated by 5.7K Blackmagic RAW, playback and reverse playback are smooth but it becomes unstable at clip-to-clip joint point.

Editing by 4K ProRes 422 HQ clips exported are smooth. There are no needs proxy media.

I think if you want to editing plural timeline, Using 4K ProRes 422 HQ clips exported from primary color graded 5.7K Blackmagic RAW is practical.

So I can editing 6K Blackmagic RAW on M1 MacBook Pro.

We can editing smoothly 6K Blackmagic RAW on M1 MacBook Pro by using generated proxy media.

In color grading part, turn off proxy media.

We can plural timeline editing by proxy media, but using exported 4K ProRes 422 HQ clips are better.

Next steps I want to challenge.

- More better workflow is?

- What shooting setting can make more better material for post production is?

If you have good ideas please tell me that.

Thanks for reading.
